Global Goon

It hasn’t been my habit to talk about albums here but I thought I’d make an exception and mention Family Glue by Global Goon which I’ve been listening to non-stop since it dropped through my mailbox.

According to his bio, he used to be a shepherd before moving to the big smoke and sharing an apartment with Richard D. James. After a first release on rephlex some people even thought they were one and the same person. Quite a story.

Family Glue could be described as upbeat bubblegum disco. The music brings psychedelic rainbow-coloured landscapes populated by big fluffy animals to mind (mine anyway). That’s where the similarity with children’s TV ends though; there’s one hell of a funky groove in there, and a thoroughly well produced one at that. It’s predominently electronic but there’s some live bass layered within all the little details and samples that adds real warmth to the whole affair.

Contrary to previous releases, Family Glue is auto-produced and available to buy online via global Goon’s website. A move that’s worth encouraging in these days of peer to peer madness.

This one’s a gem and I’ll be playing it for a long time to come.
