Time: Keep Your Brain Young

Did you know that women may live longer and exercise their brain more than menbecause they shop, a pastime that requires both physical (walking and carrying bags) and mental (price-comparison) skills? That’s what two neurologists say anyway. I guess I’m saved, I spend way too much time in the shops.

Maak hier je eigen AH-Bonuskaart!!

A guy in the Netherlands decided to start customizing supermarket loyalty cards and put up a website showing others how to do it. The Albert Heijn supermarket chain didn’t appreciate their logo being used and tried toget the site shut down. The logos have now been removed but the threat remains. I’m tempted to try that trick here.(thanks Dominique)

The Morning News - The Non-Expert: IKEA

Ikea’s a popular topic these days. Someplay gamesthere, while others rant aboutikeaphobia. Me, I just swear I’ll never set foot in the place again every time an unpronounceable item of furniture I bought there disintegrates. And a few days later, I still end up forking out for another one of these giant Swedish-styleKinder eggs.

The Independent: High streets suffocate in 'Clone Britannia'

The independent depressingly reports that Britain has become anation of clone townswhere the traditional high street is a thing of the past and all shopping areas house the same ever-repeating chain stores. They could replace “Britain” by “Europe” in that sentence, if not “most of the world” (he says, sitting behind his IKEA desk).

Alice_Bxl - Gallery and Shop

Alice, a new shop dedicated to urban art and culture, recently opened its doors in Brussels. It stocks books, magazines, toys, stickers, t-shirts and more. It also features a gallery dedicated to street art where the first exhibition will be taking place at the end of this month. It looks promising although it felt sort of empty when I visited it last week, it’s a bit early to judge though. The shop’s located at the end of the Rue Dansaert, close to the canal andLe Bonheur, a recent defector to that part of town.

Looking for banker's boxes in Brussels

I’ve been looking for bankers boxes or something similar. Basically, filing drawers made of corrugated cardboard. Does anyone know where you can find these in or around Brussels? I’ve tried the usual suspects: Ava, Schleiper, Nias, Buro Market and even Ikea, but no luck.

They say we’re shopping too much. Then again, on the other side, some people are making their own. Personally, if I could just buy fairly-made items that don’t disintegrate after a year I’d be happy camper.

Your lifestyle has already been designed.

We’ve been led into a culture that has been engineered to leave us tired, hungry for indulgence, willing to pay a lot for convenience and entertainment, and most importantly, vaguely dissatisfied with our lives so that we continue wanting things we don’t have. We buy so much because it always seems like something is still missing.

A flourishing economy mostly depends on an unsatisfied population and a declining environment.

Redu, Belgium and the slow death of paper books.

Redu is a village in the south of Belgium that's famous for its many bookshops. As physical book sales die, the village is dying alongside them. Some locals are trying new things though.

There's been a growing trend for a while now where brands diffuse a signature scent throughout their shops. Even pharmacies are up to it with essential oils. It's probably linked to some marketing theory about stimulating all our senses. Well, it has the opposite effect on me. I hate this practice and actively seek out places that don't participate. Please stop.
