Brussels - The Grand'Place

Oh yeah, the concerts last night on the Grand’Place were well worth it. I didn’t get into Luke Vibert too much, his act felt more like background music - due the usual problems with the live music laptop brigade I guess. On the other hand, Jamie Lidell entertained us with some pretty hardcore barrages of sound and his typical vocal prowess. Bogdan Raczinsky took it one step further with a bass-heavy energy-laden gig that had a good part of the crowd going pretty crazy. And all this on one ofEurope’s architectural jewels, unbelievable! I sincerely hope this isn’t a one-off. My only gripe would be that they could have at least featured one Belgian act, they should be promoting local talent.

On yer bike, Freddy!

On Friday morning, work began on painting a cycle path on the central boulevards of Brussels between De Brouckère and Midi as well as reducing car lanes to 2 instead of 4. These modifications had been planned for a long time as part of a global traffic reduction plan for the city centre and were approved by the various instances in charge of these matters. This was also to be a real-life test and open to revocation after the test period if things didn't work out.

My City, Your city: Brussels

I don’t usually follow up on those memes that tend to circulate from weblog to weblog but, after being told I don’t talk about Brussels enough, I decided I couldn’t pass up on Don Olivero’s invitation to describe my local favourites (it all seems to have started here).

There’s an official weblog (French seems to have more updates than other languages) covering the construction of Arne Quinze’s immense wooden cityscape sculpture in Brussels. (thanks Gunter)

Brussels authorities deny toxic air indicated by their own monitoring stations.

Four years ago, Clientearth and several Brussels citizens took the regional government to court over its lack of any air quality improvement plan. In the final hearing this week, all the government's lawyers managed to do to defend themselves was put the quality of their own pollution measurements into question. It's depressing.

On the contrary, rather than admitting that there is a problem and committing to solve it, the Brussels lawyers in court today have gone as far as discrediting the reliability of air quality measurements carried out by the government’s own environmental agency. In doing so, they expose the residents and workers of this city to unacceptable health risks in their day to day lives.
